Poison Ivy Acres

Come see what happens when a plant geek (C.L.) and the Energizer Bunny (Dan) purchase 2 1⁄2 acres
hydrangea border
of land. You will see a large variety of all types of plants. Stroll through the “Entry Garden” that’s filled with a combination of annuals and perennials, and discover what sweet scents are filling the “Fragrance Garden.” Find out what flowers C.L. has grown for “Annual Alley” this year. Note the trial perennials and shrubs in the test garden, cutting gardens, a large vegetable garden, berry bushes, and several flower beds. Find out what plants grow well in the often-soggy Rain Garden, and of course, see many varieties of Hydrangeas. This garden is a celebration of color, diversity, plants, and the joys of cultivation.

A Challenging Property Becomes a Beautiful Space

terraced garden
The prolific garden of Sally and Randy Moore features perennials, shrubs and many decorative trees and junipers. The right side garden is vibrant with three hydrangeas--Hydrangea serrata, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Quick Fire', and a reblooming 'Blue Jangles'. Hydrangeas also frame the left side garden and include 'Nikko Blue,' 'Penny Mac', 'Bloom Struck,' another reblooming variety. Look for 'Venice' and 'Blue Doneau,' a gorgeous blue mop head.  Other garden attractions include a waterfall which forms the centerpiece of a back yard garden which has evolved over ten years. Selecting shrubs and perennials that would thrive in the sandy soil, hot afternoon sun and dry conditions was the main challenge faced by these avid gardeners.

Directions to 11 Notre Dame Lane, Mashpee.
From Rte. 6, take exit 2 and travel south on Rte 130. In 1.6 miles, take a left on Cotuit Rd. Travel 2.5 miles and take a right on Pimlico Pond Rd. In .4 miles take the 2nd right on Notre Dame Ln. Turn around in the cul de sac and park on the right side of the street.

The Gardener and The Birder

hydrangea border
These lush gardens were designed and are tended by Master Gardener Joyce Jenks and her husband Roger, an avid birder and woodcarver. Marvel at over 90 hydrangeas including mopheads and lacecaps, Annabelles, oakleafs and PeeGees, along with an unusual pink climbing hydrangea.  Relax on comfortable garden benches and view ferns, hostas, and other colorful foliage plants while Roger describes birds attracted to the birdbaths and feeders.  Walk stone paths past the blooms of daylilies and perennials.  Joyce will share her thoughts for creating lowest maintenance, manageable gardening with plants chosen for their difficult combination of sand and clay soil.  These gardens have been continuously created since the Jenks retired to their property seven short years ago.  Hand-painted hydrangea shell ornaments and hand-carved hydrangea pins will be offered for sale.

Directions to 145 Captain Noyes Road, South Yarmouth
From Route 6 take exit 8 and head south toward Station Avenue.  Turn right at the second set of lights onto Old Townhouse Road.  Drive a mile to set of lights and take a left onto Forest Road.  Drive a mile to Captain Noyes Road on the left. #145 is the sixth house on the left, corner of Captain Stanley Road.  Ample parking on Captain Stanley Road.

Joyce titled this current view "Come, sit" in her beautiful garden. Good advice for July 13!

A Quintessential Cape Cod Family Garden

This acre lot hosts a charming mix of natural, low maintenance plantings and more formal beds grouped around the house. Hardscape is used to produce a series of oases among the flower beds.

japanese inspired garden

Visitors are invited to sit, relax and enjoy the sound of water spilling down a cascade of rocks brought by the owners from the Catskill Mt. in New York State. In 2014 the owners constructed a Japanese-influenced setting that adds to the tranquility of this space. Here you can listen as more water tumbles over the sides of an Asian garden stool. Drink in the peace and beauty of this garden space and appreciate what the owners have created from the poison ivy and cat briar woods they purchased in 2000.

Directions to148 Kendrick Road, East Harwich.
Kendrick Road runs between Church Street and Pleasant Bay Road.  Coming from exit 11 on the mid-cape highway take Pleasant Bay Road almost to the end. Just before Pleasant Bay Rd. meets Rte 28 opposite the Wequasett Resort take the right fork and make an immediate right turn onto Kendrick.  148 is the second house on the right.  Street parking is allowed on the right side of the road.

Recycling Made Beautiful--A Garden's Evolution

garden flow
Originally, this was to be a no-lawn property with pine needles.  Later wood chips were added.  It is laid out in a casual, flow design. Stone edgings, though functional, lend to a flow.  Enjoy a lavish mixture of small trees, perennials and shrubs including hydrangeas, of course! The front gardens are enhanced with a generous splash of annuals. Dahlias are featured in late summer.  Many of the plants are hand-me-downs from gardening friends or the owner’s own “must have” favorites. Some are in exactly the right spot and some are in various states of coming-to-be appropriate placement. This is the outcome of a “recycle” philosophy; using known plants and trying new ones in new ways and places. Now that a one-room addition has been completed, Pamela has the pleasure (and chore) of designing the gardens leading to and around that space. You can ask about the plans of this talented designer. Forever evolving—in this garden as in nature!

Directions to 27 Blue Rock Road, S.Yarmouth.
From Rt 6 take Exit 8 (Union St/Station Ave).  Head south toward Rt 28.  Left at 1st set of lights onto White's Path.  At end of White's Path, bear right.  Take 3rd left onto Angelo's Rd. To end, then left on Blue Rock Road to 27.

Where Nature and Nurture Meet

scented garden
Be captivated by the variety of garden features that await you on Sheila and Randy Garry's half acre property. Walk the paths through the perennial beds, just as they do each morning, to delight in new emerging or blooming plants and to plan the improvements they constantly make. As you stroll the paths, listen to the waterfall in the small fish pond and enter the "quiet area" where the ferns beckon and a bench awaits. Throughout the garden you see evidence of the owners’ love of scented plants like the shrub clethra and the upright cimicifuga. The fragrant gray green leaves of the Vitex will release their scent as you look closely at the purple flowers blooming. You can follow the short stone path that leads to a spectacular 30' tall climbing hydrangea.  Before you leave don't forget the sedum bed and the yellow speckled acuba. As you do so think about the motto of the garden owners, “Bloom where you are planted.”

Directions to 360 Oak Leaf Road, Eastham.
From Rt 6. Pass the traffic light at the Brackett Rd intersection in N Eastham, heading North.  Continue to the next traffic light. Turn right on Nauset Rd.  Continue straight, after stop sign go 400 ft and turn left on Oak Leaf.  #360 is on the right.

Sheila sent in an update of her garden at this moment. It's clearly a treat worth seeing!
